Snow's classic Red Star Over China (1938) deeply influenced our understanding of the Chinese Communists and is still in print today (Grove Atlantic, 1989. reprint). But Snow's vision of a benign, impartial role for the United States evaporated during the Cold War. Miraculously, he was never hauled before a Congressional committee in the anti-Communist hysteria of the 1950s, but he still had a strong sense of personal betrayal, especially during the Vietnam era, at an America gone wrong. Edgar Snow (1905^-72) was an eminent American journalist and author of the 1938 classic Red Star over China, about the early Chinese Communist leadership. History professor Thomas' biography of Snow is at once professionally sound and sufficiently lively for the general reader; and while cradle-to-grave in general scope, most of its pages concentrate on Snow's life-defining stay in China from 1928 to 1941. This period was a lengthy seasoning process that saw Snow's transfiguration from an individual raw in experience in Chinese affairs as well as in journalism to one who was wise in both. The years he spent there were momentous for China; the country was torn with internal strife and at the same time faced continuing Japanese territorial encroachment. Thomas absorbingly follows Snow's reactions to the significant events he witnessed; and as Snow came to recognize China's vast need for social and political change, he brought the personalities and efforts of the Chinese Communist leaders to the attention of the heretofore unnoticing world. A detailed if donnish biography of Edgar Snow, the Missouri- born reporter who became one of the West's ranking authorities on strife-torn China during the 1930s. While the work at hand suffers by comparison with Robert M. Farnsworth's vivid book (page TKTK) so far as the wayfaring correspondent's time in the Far East is concerned, this text offers a more complete account of its subject's early and later years. Relying on much the same sources as his fellow scholar, historian Thomas (Labor and the Chinese Revolution,not reviewed) tracks Snow from his Kansas City boyhood to young adulthood as an ad agency apprentice in Manhattan and beyond. Having chucked advertising for a working tour of the Global Village, the would-be travel writer (then 23) began what he believed was a brief Shanghai sojourn in 1928. With time out for trips to neighboring Asian lands, however, Snow did not leave China until early 1941. In the interim, he established himself as a top-drawer annalist of people, places, and events throughout the Middle Kingdom. More an implacable foe of imperialism than a man of the left, Snow gained the confidence of the Communists who were to make China's revolution. His perceptive portrayal of their travails and vaultingly ambitious aspirations in Red Star Over China (1937) earned him a worldwide reputation but not much money. Although Snow (a prolific diarist and letter writer) went on to produce more books and file important stories from abroad, his life did not have much of a second act. Thomas provides telling particulars on Snow's evanescent career and redeemingly happy personal life during the Cold War era. He also recounts the brief, bittersweet professional revival the expatriate enjoyed just before his death in 1972 by virtue of the minor role he played in President Nixon's breakthrough mission to Peking. About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. The best introductory guide to the stars and constellations, bar none! It has numerous features which makes learning the constellations much easier and more fun. Here are a few examples:(1) H.A. Rey has done a great service by redrawing the constellations (using the same stars) so that they *actually* look like the figure they represent. This is in contrast to so many other constellation drawings (by others) that bear no resemblance at all to the figure they supposedly represent. They come in two varieties: either they are lifelike representations with no correlation at all between the figure and the individual stars or they are stick figures that look more like abstract art!(2) Rather than deluging you with lots of irrelevant facts, H.A. Rey has chosen some very pertinent, interesting facts and anecdotes to share about the stars and the constellations. These are the kind of facts that are fun to share with others when you introduce them to the constellations!(3) H.A. Rey has very wisely left the more detailed and technical explanations for discussion later in the book. He starts off by telling you just the basics that you need to start stargazing right away!(4) On the Calendar Chart pages you will see two star charts on facing pages. On the left you'll see just the stars and on the right you'll see the stars with the connecting lines to show the constellations. Going back and forth between the pages is a great way to start to memorize the celestial patterns so that when you get outside it will be easier to pick them out!

In 1954, my Dad bought me this book and my first pair of binoculars. I was 8 years old and still have it with me. I read every page and spent many hours on top of our house in Denver winter and summer to develop my interest in Astronomy. Everyone thought I was crazy including my Dad and brothers. I got my first of several telescopes 2 years later and started to take my first crude pictures. I joined the Denver Astronomical Society and learned how to grind reflecting telescope mirrors. I was the first to earn the Astronomy merit badge in scouts in Denver in over 20 years. I graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in Astronomy in 1968. The war took me in another direction with an IT career for the next 40 years, but my love was always with the stars and Astronomy thanks to this H. A. Rey book in the 50s. I have traveled many miles to witness many astronomical events including 2 total solar eclipses in Yakima, Washington in 1979 and last year's 2017 event in Baker City, Oregon with my special cameras. I have hosted star gazing parties for kids and adults and I always recommend this book. I now have a chance to use it all over again with my wife, family, and friends on super clear nights from our mountain cabin as an old retired guy on our deck. No more rooftops! Just downloaded this digital version to my HD 10. Just as good as my older first paper edition. My only wish was that they had retained the 4 quadrant charts for each of the 12 month/time table charts for separate views looking due north, south, east, and west instead of the singular circular charts which don't work too well on Kindles with auto-rotate. Oh well, at least now I don't need a flashlight to read charts while observing. If you only only have a slight interest in the stars or Astronomy, get this book for $10. You never know, or maybe give it to a crazy kid, son, or daughter who likes watching the stars and all of nature's amazing events not on flat screens. Have fun!

Best beginner ( i.e. non-astronomer) star chart book out there. I've had 3 copies of this book since the 1980's ( the bindings do not hold up to the intended purpose) , and will buy another when this one finishes falling apart. This is the book to have with you when you and your child / grandchild learn the nighttime sky together. I went to Grand Canyon National Park a few years back to see a spectacular Leonid meteor shower and was pleased to see that this is the star guidebook that the park sold. One rub on this book, besides the binding, is finding the most recent edition because the planetary tables make each edition "dated", but Sky and Telescope and other internet sources now offer up to date planetary tables. H. A. Rey had the ability to make complex subjects of astronomy understandable to the non-scientist. I've owned this book for over 30 years and I am still enjoying it.

My favorite star book ever. If you have a day to learn the sky, read "Find the Constellations." If you have a week, read this. This book travelled with me to MIT, then to University of Colorado. Since then I've bought dozens of copies for my kids and grandkids, friends and their kids.
